Electronic D&D Map Table

A game table with an integrated TV for maps and graphics

Some buddies from Georgia Tech asked me if I would design a modular table. They needed it to quickly disassemble for travel, reassemble easily, and hold TV flush with the tabletop for use as a map. Additionally, they wanted to be able to swap the TV for a wooden centerpiece for use with board games and such.

The design we settled on comprised of a 2-piece tabletop with removable legs. We were aiming to be able to accommodate up to 12 people and a TV, so we needed a particularly beefy table. In order to make it strong enough while remaining portable, I added two removable, full-length supports in addition to the standard table apron.

After glueing, we used the CNC machine to flatten our table top.

Next, we secured the legs with wooden brackets, sanded the surface, and stained.

I created a SOLIDWORKS assembly from their rough sketch, and we iterated back and forth a few times to home in on the necessary features. The TV would be supported on each end and by one board across the top. We kept support to a minimum to allow enough airflow and prevent overheating

We went to a local hardwood store to pick up some red oak for our tabletop and legs. We planed and jointed our wood, then used a table saw to rip our long boards into our predetermined pattern, then we glued the tabletop together.

We made the apron with a table saw kerf along one side and secured them to the table with z-clips. This allows the wood to naturally expand and contract without cracking.

The table has now been through two years of use and is still in perfect condition.
