Wave Powered Desalination

A new application for wave power to provide clean drinking water

Sustainable engineering was the theme of the main project in the first CAD class I took at Georgia Tech. My team and I decided to design a device to use the power of ocean waves to force seawater through a desalination filter, thus providing potable water to communities without electricity.

We each designed a section of the machine. My section was the internal mechanism and final assembly. I focused on optimizing for manufacturability and cost, because a device marketed toward low income communities doesn't mean much if it comes at a premium.

My idea for the device was simple: as an oncoming wave lifts the orange float up, the pump forces water through a desalination pump and into a tank. As the wave subsides, the mechanism drops back down and pulls water back into the pump
